Mr. Billy Ray Moore

Billy Ray Moore was born in Madison Count near New Hope on November 21, 1938. He was the eldest of five children born to Robert (Son) and Louise Jones Moore. He grew up in the Nebo and New Hope communities. He attended New Hope School, graduating in 1959. He worked in Chicago for a few months in order to earn enough money to attend college. He entered Auburn University and attended for a few quarters before running short of funds. He returned home and found employment at Thikol in Huntsville. He enrolled in college classes being taught at night in Butler High School. He entered the U.S. Army in 1961. After Basic Training, he was stationed in Fort Hood, Texas. There he served as the Helicopter Crew Chief. When he was discharged, he returned to his job at Thikol and enrolled in night classes at Athens College. He married Betty Davis who was working in Tuscumbia, so he moved there and enrolled in Florence State College (now University of North Alabama) earning a degree in Business Administration. Following graduation, he worked as a foreman in the cast shop at the aluminum plant in Russellville. A year later he was hired as a foreman for the new aluminum plant in Scottsboro. After a few years, he enrolled in Alabama A & M University and earned a master’s degree in business. He returned to the aluminum plant and began work as a scheduler. His next position was metal procurement. He enjoyed this because he met many new people and had contact with suppliers from across the U.S., Canada, and some European countries. This was his position he held until his retirement in 2001. Upon retirement, Billy and Betty had a house built at Grant and moved there. He wanted a space large enough to grow and plant trees. He was a graduate of the Master Gardener program in Jackson County and wanted to put into practice what he had learned. With retirement came the opportunity to travel. The Moore’s along with several other close friends went on many Caribbean and river cruises, trips to Europe, bus trips across the western states and car trips through the eastern half of the U.S. Thes travels resulted in making new friends from many states. He never met a stranger and enjoyed listening to their experiences and sharing his own life experiences with them. Betty enjoyed having him travel with her to meetings of the various state and national organizations of which she is a member. This offered him an opportunity to expand his circle of friends and acquaintances. Billy was always supportive of the work and various activities in which Betty and the daughters were involved. The spent many years attending Auburn University football games together. They also enjoyed annual vacations at the beach with the Dozier family. He enjoyed fishing and golfing trips with several of his coworkers and friends he made throughout his career. Billy is survived by his wife Betty; their daughters and sons in law Scarlette and Jay Tuley, Lindsey and Dusty Hudson; grandchildren, Beck Tuley, Iris Tuley, Parker Hudson, and Connar Hudson; siblings, Lany Moore (Diane), Wanda Ruth Manley, and Bertie Woody (Rob); several nephews, nieces, and a large number of cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Peggy Cross, and granddaughter, Riley Tuley. He has been in memory care at Grandview Gardens in Huntsville. Every day for three years the nurses and caregivers brought joy to his life along with the medicine, therapy, activities, delicious meals, and special treats. The family is especially thankful for having them in his life. Billy and Betty were married in Lane Chapel at the KDS DAR School on December 21, 1963. Visitation will be held at Grant Memorial Chapel on Friday, November 14, 2025 beginning at 11 a.m. A funeral service will follow at 1 p.m. Burial will in Troup Cemetery.
