Mrs. Jean Selvage

Alva Jean Selvage, age 91, passed away peacefully in her sleep from natural causes on Tuesday, June 24th, 2025, in Kennesaw, GA, close to her family that loved her very much. Born November 8th, 1933, in Grant, Alabama, Jean was the beloved daughter of Alton and Rotha Elkins. She also grew up in Grant, where she attended the Kate Duncan Smith DAR School, forming friendships and memories that lasted a lifetime. In addition to being born and raised in Grant, Jean spent most of her life in Grant, as well, and it is also where she found the love of her life, Glendon Selvage. She married her late husband and together they shared over 70 years of marriage, raising one child, their daughter Rhonda. Jean and Glendon occasionally moved away from Grant, where they spent some time living in both the Florida panhandle and rural Tennessee, and even a few other parts of Alabama like the city of Arab, but they always found their way back to Grant because that was, above all other places, their home. And in Grant was where Jean built a home filled with love, warmth, and laughter where her grandchildren would often come visit and even spend their summers. A devoted mother, grandmother, and friend, Jean was known for her kind heart, sense of humor, and her passion for the church, with which she was heavily involved. Even as she got older and it became more difficult for her to get around on her own, it was not often Jean missed a service at the Grant Church of Christ, her spiritual home for most of her life. Jean also touched the lives of many through her involvement with the church, as well as charitable donations to various children’s organizations such as Shriners Hospital and St. Jude’s Hospital. An inspirational and comforting presence to those around her, Jean was always one to “walk the walk” of her faith and felt it important to give back to her community and to organizations that truly helped people. She is survived by her daughter Rhonda Ayers, son-in-law Larry Ayers, granddaughter Susan Ayers Barrier, grandson-in-law Eric Barrier, and great-granddaughters Lilyan Dean, Alora Dean, Hallie Ayers, and Amelia Barrier. She is preceded in death by her husband Glendon Selvage, brother James Samuel Elkins, and granddaughter Kelly Ayers. A service to celebrate her life will be held at 12PM Monday, June 30th at Grant Church of Christ located at 4197 Cathedral Caverns Hwy, Grant, AL 35747. There will be a viewing prior to the service at 11AM, also at Grant Church of Christ, for any who would like to attend. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly asks that donations be made to any children’s charity or hospital of the donator’s choosing in Jean’s memory.
